Cobalt Light Frigate
From Sins of a Solar Empire
The workhorse of the TEC fleet, the Cobalt combines speed with an average weapons‘ package. Cobalts are best deployed in groups and packs of upgraded Cobalts are extremely effective at hunting down antimatter-dependant units. As they are typically manned by the TEC‘s newest recruits, fleet commanders are well advised to keep them on a tight leash lest they charge into battle prematurely.
Extracted from the game manual.
Most early TEC fleets are comprised mostly of these small, light and fast frigates. While not spectacular in any respect, the combined firepower of a couple of these is usually enough to take out any neutral planetary defenders or to fend off a pirate raid. Having more defensive and offensive wallop than the Advent variant, and a lower price tag in resources and support than the Vasari, it is the most rounded of any of the light combat frigates. For antimatter disruption it can gain the Sabotage Reactor ability, which causes an enemy to take damage and be unable to use antimatter for a duration if they use antimatter during its effects. If employed properly this can quickly disable support ships for a short time.
Strategy
- The Cobalt like the Disciple Vessel gains the ability to steal antimatter from enemy ships and then transfer that antimatter to your own ships. This is a very useful ability but only in supplying your frontline units with antimatter. Not so much your Capital Ships because more then likely they will be outside of the range of your Cobalts when in fleet formation. The goal with these two abilities is to allow the Cobalts to steal antimatter and give antimatter with efficiency. By this I mean the Cobalt not having to move at all. As such I have found that pairing them with Kodiaks or a wolfpack of LRM's without caps a viable strategy.
- Another strategy is a delivery system set-up where Cobalts fly into enemy formations and steal the antimatter from enemy capital ships then head back and supply your own Cap or Caster ships with that antimatter. The problem with this is that Cobalts tend to die very easily and as such I do not believe this is an economical strategy for the amount of antimatter actually stolen and received.
